The Toer Populair comes equipped with all-weather drum brakes, a popular choice on a bike made for all sorts of weather and conditions, and very common on Dutch bicycles! The Toer Populair, however, has something quite beautiful added to the braking mechanism: old-fashioned, rod-brake style, machined metal levers. You can see the graceful swoop of these levers on the underside of the handlebars in the picture, pulling one lever smartly engages both brakes. This is great when you’re riding one-handed (with an umbrella or something to drink), and it gives the manufacturer a chance to show of the quality of the machining possible these days.
Notice the small thumb shifter mounted on the handlebars? This tiny click shifter leads to the rear wheel, where a three-speed Sturmey-Archer hub provides reliability and smooth riding.
